Teachers’ strike

We have stepped into an expected teachers’ strike. Our society is divided on the objectives of the strike and its consequences.

As involuntary strike participants, you are asked:

· Explore the teachers’ strike timeline below.

· Write a well-built composition on the subject.

· Send your composition to my email on time.

· Leave your comment after seeing short movies.

The Teachers’ Strike Timeline

Since 2001, the teachers have been working without an agreement on a collective salary because of a law that forbade negotiations between employers and professional organizations.

Since the expiration of that law in August 2005, the teachers’ association has been trying to get the Finance Ministry to negotiate with them, but to no avail.

Teachers try to push for more rights and benefits for teachers. Teachers accuse the Finance Ministry of ignoring their requests dealing with wages, work conditions, and other issues unrelated to the budget.

* Interesting situation is observed at the Zinman High Comprehensive school, weak and average students have decided not to come and they prefer to be skivers and the strike is an excellent excuse for their laziness. The headmaster, Zohar Nir, has ordered an annoucement in a local newspaper to Zinman school students to continue their studies and prepare for upcoming matriculation exams. NO EFFECT!

* After two weeks from the beginning of the strike, the Head of Irgun has come to the school in order to convince Histadrut teachers to join their strike but teachers don’t want to lose their salaries.

* There have been a number of meetings and consultations between the Ministry of Finance and Irgun but no agreement has been set!

* Hanukkah has changed the situation and Mr. Erez was invited to P.M. Ehud Olmert’s party. They lit the sixth candle and said nothing of the teachers’ strike. The Israeli Supreme Court has decided to force the teachers to come back to work after the Hanukkah’s break.

* Today, December 13, many Irgun teachers have come back to work at Zinman Comprehensive School. As it was predicted, the teachers have gained nothing. THE SAD END!

* Two months after the strike both pupils and teachers are constantly struggling with preparation for upcoming matriculation exams.

Teachers on Strike by Shir Butbul

Two weeks ago the teacher’s strike began in most schools across the country. The strike was started by Irgun teachers.

There are at least four reasons for the strike:

1. Promotion of the teachers;

2. Salary growth;

3. Reform of the Israeli educational system;

4. Protection against unfair firing.

The teachers fight for their rights, and they are right, but the strike is against students. We are losing essential knowledge and we don’t learn a thing. The result of this is poor test marks. At Zinman Junior High Schoolwe have too many teachers of the Irgun, and we are confused because we don’t know who teach or not. In my opinion, teachers should fight for their rights, but they need to find another solution!

  1. To tell you the truth, I love strikes! Who doesn’t love to get some free time from school, teachers and the studying?
    But when I think of it again, I understand that strikes are bad news for students. We lose study materials, and it will affect on us- sooner or later on the bad side.
    Because of that reason we need to stand up and protest! We have rights and we need to protect them.

    So students, stand together! Fight till the last minute, and get your lost study hours!

  2. A teachers strike is a normal thing in the Israeli education. Every year we begin with that kind of action. And every year we have fun of it. At least at first; we have much more free time, we can spend some time home, in bad.
    But the current strike does not really make us happy. Especially becuase we are not ninth grade anymore and we have Bagrut exams this year, we have to study, study and again study.
    Moreover, Teachers, have a rest! a MONTH length is too much for a ordinal strike action.
    If you think of it, NONE of us gains of it.

  3. It is your annoying strikebreaking English teacher. In my opinion, it is waste of time and resources in order to get something for our educational system which is in agony and I don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. I truly love David Ben-Gurion’s saying “In Israel, in order to be realist, you must believe in miracles!” To my great disappointment, we cannot afford miracles!

  4. When I was exploring the timeline of the teachers’ strike I was shocked to find out that this fight has gone back for years and years. I do understand teacher why they need the improvement of the situation but I have a suggestion: if they want to change something in the system, teachers should start changing their attitude to their profession…because no one takes them seriously and money wouldn’t change the situation.

  5. I do believe in any changes especially in our schools because I haven’t seen any changes for years!!!
